February 21 is one of the most important day in a year in Bangladesh. This day is announced by UNESCO as International Mother Language Day. It commemorates the death of students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bengali in then Pakistan. Even after 61 years, people mourn their death and cherish their language and literature with great pride.

It was February 20. I suddenly thought I should talk and work in Japanese today.

Mr. R, an account officer, came to my desk. So I asked him “Ohayo-gozaimasu. Nan-de syouka?” Mr. R was puzzled.

“I would like to speak in Japanese today as tomorrow is Mother Language day (in Japanese, of course)” He again looked puzzled.

“OK, I guess you need “CHECK” Which one? (in Japanese)”

Finally, he got a check book from me and  went back to his desk. Good for him.

After a while, Mr. Rcame back to me.

I told him “You need my signature. Where should I put my signature?(again in Japanese)” He reply in Bangla “Ms. Fujisaki, here please”.

Once my colleagues understood what I was intending, communication started flow so smooth. We all enjoyed a little change in our environment. And IT is sometime necessary. I may announce another “Mother Language Day” sometime.
