Supporting Working Children

Emergency Relief Assistance ・ Development AidChildren in Kathmandu and Patan, are working in a variety of fields such as rag picker, domestic workers, porter, restaurant or bar workers and tempo conductors. Among these jobs, children working in restaurants and as servants were in crucial situation but had merely been supported continuously by any NGOs.

With partnership of CAP-CRON, SHAPLA NEERb is committed to providing an environment where the working children can spend time in peace and directing children to a brighter future with the help of proactive communities.

We provide the following programs that directly apply to aiding children: Mobile clinics, mobile classrooms, career training, legal support, emergency centers where abused children can seek help, rehabilitation for children separated from their parents, training counselors for therapy centers for abused children, seminars that highlight children rights, and ensuring that involved parties continue to work independently with the programs by establishing a committee.

1.Mobile Education

A classroom for restaurant child worker that takes place in the restaurants. Typically between the hours of 12pm to 1pm, when work is slower, children gather in the back of restaurants and learn to read and write. It is important to organize learning programs where employers can see in order for them to acknowledge children's needs.
Currently 17 children are part of the mobile classroom in 6 locations within the Patan region. One is a girl. They are around 12-15 years in age.
Last year, new learning materials were developed for children who often moved around. The learning materials consist of useful vocabulary and teaches societal and family structure.

2.Mobile Clinic

AAiming to improve sanitation conditions for the working children, the mobile clinic is open in 1-2 locations every month. These clinics are mainly provided for those involved in the mobile education, but other working children may receive treatment as well. The same doctor has been in charge of the project ever since it started, and she has been building strong ties with the children.
Many children suffer from skin diseases, allergies, and digestive problems because they often work with water. If needed, children are introduced to larger hospitals, and provided money for treatment fees.

3.Non-formal Education Program (NFE)

Everyday for two hours (11am to 1pm), children are educated in music, recreational activities, saving money, hygiene, and other knowledge that is necessary for survival. The education program helps stimulate children's desires and goals in a brighter future.

4.Scholarship Program

Depending on the family's financial condition, children who take part in the scholarship program receive school books, a bag, school uniform, and supplies. Meetings are held with parents in order to ensure schooling continues.

5.Projects around Patan region

The majority of children who are involved in our support programs come from the villages of the Patan region. In order to lower the number of working children, we collaborate with the village communities. We trade ideas with women, school teachers, and leaders of the villages. Centering around the school, we focus on discussing and communicating the rights and needs of the children.

6.Other Projects

Career and skill training, helping obtain licenses for work, emergency aid for injured children, consultation with families.

Disaster Preparedness

Disaster prevention is an urgent issue in Nepal, as well as in Bangladesh. Because of the activity of the Himalaya, a big earthquake may strike Kathmandu in the near future. In case of natural disaster in Kathmandu, SHAPLA NEER has started arranging manuals and are strengthening relationships with NGOs specialized in disaster preparedness.
